In the past decade, several new blood glucose measurement techniques have been investigated. Using the Microwave method is a promising technique to provide non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. In this thesis, different microwave biosensors are presented based on the underlying concept of the interaction between the electromagnetic field which is concentrated around the sensing area of a resonator, and the glucose samples. The small variation in the dielectric properties (relative permittivity and dielectric dissipation) which characterizes the changes in the blood glucose levels could be detected across the signal path. For individuals with different glucose levels, the permittivity of their blood would change accordingly. The purpose of this research is to analyze the feasibility of using microwaves resonators as a blood glucose sensing device for the diagnosis of diabetes based on the transmission, reflection, and the induced shift in the resonant frequency for different resonators. These sensors present complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRS) or defected ground structures (DGS). The presented sensors utilize different shapes like slot, hexagonal and square configurations. These sensors were designed over different substrates such as Rogers RO3210 substrate, FR-4, Rogers RO4300C and fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. The simulations are performed using full-wave electromagnetic simulator CST Microwave Studio. Two models were used to represent the variation of the glucose in the blood sample by using the Cole-Cole model and the Debye model over the frequency range (0 – 7 GHz). The sensors are simulated for detecting glucose variations in the range of 40-500 mg/dL and 250-16000 mg/dL. Additionally, many parameters were studied as the blood volume and the thickness of the skin. Along with theoretical estimations, the sensors were validated experimentally using a setup of a vector network analyzer (VNA), to measure the transmission coefficient, the reflection coefficients, and the phase. The resonators exhibit higher sensitivity which is significantly better than many previous studies. Both the simulation and the experimental results illustrate the potential of this technique for measuring glucose levels non-invasively. These sensors are promising for wearable non-invasive blood glucose monitoring devices because they are cost-effective, compact, and convenient.
