Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) Doctoral Egypt - Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) - School of Energy , Environmental , Chemical and petrochemical Engineering - Environmental Engineering Department 2015 Summary: Rosetta promontory , Egypt experiences coastal problems such as severe erosion along the shoreline and siltation problem at the outlet This is due to the lack of water and sediment resources as a side effect of constructing the High Aswan Dam (HAD) and other head structures along the Nile River The shoaling inside the outlet leads to hindering the navigation process of fishing boats , negative impacts to estuarine and salt marsh habitat and decrease the efficiency of the cross section to transfer the flow during emergencies to the sea Although protection works have been constructed to mitigate shoreline erosion and a frequent dredging has been carried out to overcome the siltation problem inside the outlet But the situation is still unstable Many attempts have been implemented to overcome each problem alone whether on the eastern or western side of the outlet But , there was no enough attention to the severe erosion in front of the seawalls in addition that an integrated solution for both problems has not been achieved yet The coastal problems have been mitigated abroad by using hard structures and soft measures such as jetties and sand nourishment respectively The main objective of the thesis is to develop an applicable and integrated approach in terms of the reestablishment of hydraulic conditions to reach a sustainable stability condition for the outlet The expected stability condition can be achieved through two approaches ; the first approach (32 alternatives) is to control the existing situation to reach a new condition of stability of Rosetta outlet through an equilibrium cross section , diverting additional flow from Burullus Lake , and controlling sediments transported from east and west of the outlet The second one (35 alternatives) is to seek for an optimal alternative to maintain the stability condition of the outlet through adding sand nourishment at the eroded areas in front of seawall in addition to combining hard measures with soft one Moreover , the risk assessment is investigated due to the potential discharges of floods , drought , and building control structures along the Nile River The used integrated approach includes developing a calibrated / validated hydrodynamic and particle tracking model based on Coastal Modeling System software package (CMS)
