Master Egypt - Japan University of Science and Technology (E - JUST) - School of the Institute of Basic and Applied Sciences (BAS) - Biotechnology Department 2024 Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major constituent of petroleum , which have become a global and critical environmental and public health concern due to their ubiquitous , persistent, and recalcitrant nature , therefore are categorized as priority pollutants by United Staes Environmental Agency due to their ecotoxic , mutagenic , carcinogenic , and genotoxic properties Several treatment technologies such as adsorption, chemical oxidation , thermal treatment , extraction , microwave irradiation, and electrokinetic remediation have been used to eliminate PAHs from the environment , which are expensive and could potentially lead to secondary pollution On the other hand , Biodegradation or bioremediation and Sonophotocatalysis , among these techniques have garnered considerable interests due to their simple operation , cost effectiveness , ability to produce high oxidation power , and mineralization efficiency
