Wall painting is both exhausting and hazardous for humans, and hence there is a strong
motivation to develop a robot that can automate this process without human intervention.
This need was realized and several automated systems were presented in the literature. The
available systems are bulky and can hardly be applied for indoor applications; therefore
there is much scope for improvement. This study describes a new painting robot design and
development at full scale consisting of a painting arm that scan walls vertically and
mounted over a mobile platform with controlled motion. Sensors are fitted to both the robot
arm and the mobile base to control the motion of the robot autonomously. Several Micro
controllers are used to control basic robot modules and implement the painting, planning
and control algorithms. Design of separate modules and their integration and testing is
presented. Ball screw joint actuation system is employed and justified through analysis and
comparison with popular harmonic drives. This comparison proved interesting
enhancements in accuracy, torque capacity and drive weight under certain conditions of the
new driver. The results will help system designers in their early choice of drivers. Robot
experiments were carried out to verify our control strategies. Experiments confirmed the
successful function and operation of the robot. The vertical scan of the arm is completed in
40 seconds which resulted in a painting rate of 10 m²/h. The robot weighs 35 kg which
ensures its portability for indoor applications.
