520 _aClimate change has led to adverse effects on human health and well-being , especially in regions with harsh climates like Egypt , which is experiencing a warming trend To address this , the research focuses on courtyard design as a method to improve building performance in terms of thermal , energy , and health aspects Courtyards , a traditional feature in hot regions , can passively enhance building design by adapting to natural resources for heating and cooling However , there is a gap in understanding how courtyard design simultaneously impacts thermal , energy , and health factors Therefore , this research aims to evaluate and improve the courtyard's characteristics to mitigate the detrimental impact of climate change The study focuses on three design criteria : thermal comfort , energy efficiency , and public health in the courtyards It investigates the compatibilities among the three design criteria and their values in various courtyard geometries to keep up with the variety of case studies and varied climate circumstances Thus , the study intends to contribute to the establishment of guidelines for designing courtyards Due to its importance , this research focuses on educational buildings The study aims to develop a courtyard to achieve a sustainable , healthy building The methodology is based on both on-site measurements and air sampling , as well as simulations of the case study model , as the coupling of these approaches is recommended in the comparative analysis The selected days for conducting measurements were determined in the summer with a harsh hot climate in August , and the air sampling was determined during the transition seasons of spring and summer due to the high fluctuation in wind direction and speed , as well as the particulate suspended on the air because of the monsoon wind The study is structured into seven chapters The first chapter outlines the study and highlights its significance , setting the stage for the investigation in the subsequent sections The main outcome of this chapter is to establish the research direction The second chapter reviews the literature on courtyards and their impact on thermal , energy , and health objectives Following an extensive review of the literature , this study has pinpointed two primary strategies for addressing the research gaps The first strategy aims to enhance the cooling and heating efficiency of courtyards , while the second strategy evaluates the quality of ventilation The third chapter presents the characteristics of the selected case study
